College of Nursing
The first Nursing Educational Program in the country was offered by UST as Escuela de Practicantes in 1879. A School of Home Nursing was then opened in 1939 but was closed at the outbreak of the 2nd World War in 1941. In 1945, the foundation of the Philippines’ first Nursing Baccalaureate program was laid down in UST by Fr. Francisco Del Rio and Sor. Taciana Triñanes. The School of Nursing formally opened in 1946, and elevated its university rank as a College in 1957.
The present course offering is the Philippines’ first Basic Collegiate Baccalaureate Programme instituted on February 12, 1946. The four-year curriculum is outcome-based and designed to prepare a professional nurse to render nursing care to individuals, families, and groups in any setting, at any stage of the health-illness continuum. The College of Nursing was granted the Center of Excellence by the Commission on Higher Education in 1996, PACUCOA Level IV status in 2015, and AUN-QA in 2018. The College of Nursing commits itself to provide a Catholic Nursing Education geared toward excellent health care delivery reflected in teaching, research, and community development services that respond to national and global needs. As a testament of excellent performance in nursing education and instruction, it has consistently produced the highest number of passers and topnotchers, and the number one nursing school in the Philippines with a 100% passing rate in the Philippine Nurse Licensure Examination given by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) of the Philippines. Thomasian nurses, here and abroad, continue to make their mark as competent, committed and compassionate nursing leaders, educators and practitioners.
